East Hull Labour Party office felt the presence of Hull Stop the War Campaign when more than sixty protesters congregated to make their disgust to this war clear to John Prescott MP (Hull East), and Deputy Prime Minister. Of course, continuing his traditional democratic behaviour, Prescott was nowhere to be seen, in spite that the morning of the last Saturday of every month is allocated for his monthly surgery. His excuse? The offices were being redecorated. A war cabinet meeting was also being held that morning. How convenient!
Banners were unfolded, placards were being held high as protesters met in front of the offices of the Labour Party, the pavement still adorned with the white silhouettes of fallen bodies. Speeches followed, while a solitary pro-war heckler held her own "Back our boys" protest at the back of the crowd. The police presence was quite heavy, as it is becoming the norm now with any activity that any anti-war group carries out.
After a while, the demonstration moved down Holderness Road to set up a petition stall in front of Boyes (just because there is ample space in front of it, the store was not being targeted). Many people signed the "call the troops back" petitions, while another heckler threatened us, just to be dealt swiftly by a mounted police officer.
It was a beautiful spring day throughout.
