A handful of protesters from Hull Against the War managed to stage a blockade to all lanes of the Humber Bridge at about 1.30pm by stopping several cars in the middle of the bridge after having been driven from both entrances.
This action was accomplished in spite of the heavy police presence, and lasted for about twenty minutes; after which the protesters agreed to lift the blockade. At least a couple of oil tankers were detained for several minutes.
Tempers flared when irate drivers (pro-war?) challenged the protesters on the northbound lanes: some were manhandled, threats were uttered, leaflets were spilled on the tarmac surface, a banner was thrown onto the footpath, the paintwork of one of the cars was slightly scratched, and a watch bracelet was twisted. No arrests were made. The police attitude was firm but considerate.
While the importance of staging mass resistance to the war is acknowledged, it is also considered necessary to make the presence of an opposition to the war continuously felt by actions such as this, even when they are carried out by a handful of committed individuals.
